Summer in a Jar

That last few summers have been a bit challenging. Last year Lee was between jobs. The summer before that he spent half the summer travelling for work and I travelled a bunch as well. The summer before that we bought the house.

This summer we've cut back on travel. We're both working. We're not buying a house. I can't tell you how much we want to get out truly enjoy this summer.

But here's the thing -- summer is short. And I know us. We'll keep saying, "Oh, we can do that next weekend." Then before we know it the summer will be over and we'll regret not doing things but we don't want to rigidly schedule our summer either. We wanted to find a happy medium and we're hoping we've found it. I present to you Summer in a Jar.

I got the idea on Pinterest, of course, but the idea itself is from Life in the Green House. I liked the overall idea but we had to tweak it a little. We didn't put any big trips away in our jar. We've already got trips to Chicago and Prince Edward Island planned over the next couple of months. We really want to enjoy our local area this year.

I didn't dye or paint our sticks because I'm lazy. I used two different coloured Sharpies on them (it's not easy to see the difference in the photos but I promise they really are different colours). Purple ink means that the activity will cost us some money. It may be museum, park or parking fees. Maybe it requires a long drive and extra gas in our car.

Items with blue ink have miminal costs. Some are completely free. We got good at finding free things last summer.

Some activities may take a whole day while others we can do in an evening. Some require sunny weather while others are rainy day activities. (Based on the weather so far this year, we may need to add some more of those rainy day activities to jar.)

Here are a few of the items in our jar o' fun:

  • Go on a river cruise
  • Mini-putt
  • Fondue night!
  • Visit Meech Lake (This just amuses me... It's a Canadian thing.)
  • Visit the MacKenzie King Estate
  • Picnic at the arboretum
  • Fireworks!
  • Driveway tic-tac-toe
  • Make a new recipe x2 (we each get to chose one)
  • Host a BBQ
  • Explore a new-to-us walking trail
  • Star Wars Identities
  • Board game night

I know we're not going to be able to do everything in the jar and that's ok but I'm hoping we made a good dent in it.

What do you want to do this summer?
