24 Days of Christmas Books: Wishin' and Hopin': A Christmas Story

wishin and hoping christmas story wally lambWishin' and Hopin': A Christmas Story by Wally Lamb is another book that I read a few years ago. I was a bit uncertain about it. But there, I'm getting ahead of myself.

The year is 1964. LBJ is in the White House and Beatlemania is running high. Felix Funicello (yes, related to Annette) is mostly trying to survive fifth grade. He's your typical ten-year-old in that he's trying to figure out the birds and the bees, likes dirty jokes (which he doesn't really understand hence much of the attempting to figure out the birds and the bees), and loves television. He's pretty convinced that this Christmas is going to be the best one he's ever had.

Wishin' and Hopin' reminded me a bit of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. The stories aren't really the same but there's a certain spirit to it that reminded me of it. In parts at least. The other parts I liked less, and strongly suspect I would have enjoyed it more had I been a ten-year-old boy myself at one point.

Not recommended for anyone who can't appreciate a dirty joke as there are many.
