24 Days of Christmas Books: You Better Not Cry

better not cry augusten burroughsAugusten Burroughs' You Better Not Cry was one of my Christmas reads a few years ago. It was the first of his books that I'd read and I still have not read Running With Scissors. You Better Not Cry is the chronological remembrance of Burroughs' Christmases past. But those that expect Christmas remembrances to mean happy and fuzzy memories has best look elsewhere. At least in the first few chapters.

With the first few stories I wasn't quite sure what I had gotten myself into. It wasn't exactly uplifting. The humour felt hard and forced. But as time went on and the years passed Burroughs softened a little. There was still a lot of sadness. It would be hard to write of your partner dying of AIDS at Christmas and have it not be a bit sad.

You Better Not Cry is not a Christmas book for everyone. But for anyone who is looking for something a bit less twee than the usual Christmas memoir it's worth a look.
