24 Days of Christmas Books: Skipping Christmas

skipping christmas john grishpamI never fail to be surprised when authors I really don't associate with Christmas-y stuff write Christmas novels. Authors such as John Grisham. When I think of him I think of his courtroom dramas and summers in high school since I'm pretty sure that's the last time I read one. But I find myself tempted by his Skipping Christmas because there were years when I really wanted to do the same.

I spent the better part of a decade spending Christmas away from family, due to money or vacation time constraints. I'd spend it alone or be the stranger at someone else's Christmas dinner. If you ever get sick of the holidays I recommend doing it just once. You will likely end up embracing your holidays like you would not believe. Just ask my husband. He liked to star in his own version of The Grinch That Stole Christmas until he had to spend one alone on the other side of the world.

So yeah, a couple that purposely decides to skip Christmas? I want to read about that. Especially since it turns out to have hilarious consequences.

Make it a double feature! Read the book and then watch the movie based on the book, Christmas with the Kranks starring Tim Allen. What's Christmas without a Tim Allen movie? Nothing, that's what.
