24 Days of Christmas Books: Matchless

matchless gregory maguireI love good retellings of fairy tales and perhaps no one does it better than Gregory Maguire. Once upon a time NPR asked Maguire for a Christmasy story and Maguire created Matchless, a retelling of the Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Match Girl. In Matchless, Maguire takes the classic tale and combines it with the story of Frederik, a boy who builds a city out of trash.

I've always liked The Little Match Girl. It's sad and hopeful. It doesn't quite deliver on the happily ever in the way we're used to. I can understand why that appealed to Maguire and I am hoping that I like his newly created Frederik as well.

Have you read it? Did you like it?
