Amateur Gourmet

I started reading Adam Roberts' blog, The Amateur Gourmet, after a friend brought his Janet Jackson post-Superbowl nipple cupcakes to a potluck. I mean, they were pretty clever. (And tasty.) I read his blog on and off for a few years and I've been meaning to check out his book for while.

So I finally did...and now I'm not sure what to say.

While it aimed at foodie newbies it's not really a "beginner's how-to" book. Anyone wanting to learn about how to cook probably would not find this useful. At all.

Nor it is a book for advanced foodies. They would find it too simple. Too shallow. Although, depending on their sense of humour, they might find it mildly amusing.

The Amateur Gourmet is really more of a memoir than anything. Sure it's dressed up as something else but when it comes down to it, it's a memoir. A memoir about learning to love food and learning to love to provide others with food. And it's littered with Roberts own personal brand of humour. It's readable and enjoyable, but don't expect a true "how to" book.
