  • Random Knittyness

    Date: 2008.10.30 | Category: Knitting | Response: 2

We were walking along Wellington Street (um is there only one in Ottawa Street because names change and are reused so much I feel I should ask?) a few weeks ago when we noticed something slightly unusual. Knitting. Lots and lots of knitting.

Cameraless though I was I did have my trusty cellphone and it’s very unspectacular camera so I faithfully took photos of every bit of knittyness that I found – from the fire hydrant cozy to pole scarves. Alas for some unknown reason only one picture saved. DOH! But I give you random knittyness, even if it is in a much smaller dose than originally intented.

Now if you only saw one such example you’d probably be inclined to think that someone merely dropped their scarf and some nice person picked it up off the ground and tied it on the pole. However when you see a scarf on every pole for several blocks and see a fire hydrant cozy it can only mean one thing.

The street is being taken over by knitters.

And it is! I’m sure it’s no coincidence that Wabi-Sabi had recently opened. I haven’t made it in yet but I have driven past and it looks totally drool-worthy from the outside. Knitters taking over the community – I love it!

  • Socks are finished!

    Date: 2008.04.14 | Category: Knitting | Response: 2

I finished my first pair of socks on Saturday while watching the first half of season 1 of Rome (we did the entire season in 2 days…). Pictures to come when I find the camera batteries.

I was talking to my mother about knitting during one of our recent phone conversations. My mom tried to teach me to knit a couple of times when I was a kid but it just never worked for me for some reason. Then one fall, after returning to a fairly normal work schedule following a few months of overtime, I decided to teach myself to knit. I was bored and only got two tv channels (couldn’t afford cable). So thanks to the internet and Knitting for Dummies I taught myself how to knit. And then I didn’t really do much with it because I’m a chicken shit when it comes to trying hard things…like actual patterns (scarves are easy, you just knit a really long rectangle).

So socks were a big deal for me. And my mother was very impressed that I was knitting socks.

Me: I’m working on the second sock
Mom: Wait. You can turn a heel?
Me: I messed it it up and had to rip it back a few times but eventually I did it! I felt like a freaking genius!
Mom: I can’t turn a heel and I’ve been knitting since you’ve been born.
Me: Yes but I have the internet to help me.
Mom: You can turn a heel. That pisses me off!

She said it with love. I promise. That being said, it amuses me to no end that my mother swore. About knitting socks! Ha!

  • I am in love

    With a pair of socks.

This is the thing – I haven’t even finished knitting one pair of socks (I’m one the foot of the second sock now).  And to be honest, they are kinda crappy socks mostly because I knit them with very unforgiving and TIGHT cotton yarn. And the socks that I’m in love with – they are um…a wee bit complex. But they are so purty.

I, of course, found the pattern by following the bloggy breadcrumbs. I was reading The Seated View and then went to Bowerbird Knits to see a better picture of the pattern. It’s called Francie after the character in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.

The problem? “These socks were designed with an adventurous knitter in mind.”

I’m so not an adventurous knitter. I’m really not. Plus see the above about how I have yet to finish an actual pair of socks.

That being said I’m about 3 seconds away from buying the pattern because I LOVE THOSE SOCKS.

This can only end in tears…and wine.

  • You know…

I think it may be entirely possible that the only reason I pretend I knit (I’m able to but really, when’s the last time I finished a project?) is that I really love the knitting accessories.

  • Too cute

The new fall 2006 knitty is out.

This is possibly the most adorable knitted garment ever. I wanty but I’m not convinced of my ability to knit that well.

I may need to join this next time.

    Clicky

I actually did know that this was going on this weekend but didn't go for a number of reasons. One was that I had plans. One was that my current project is HUGE and not portable.  The last reason is that I'm chicken.

But now that I've seen the and felt the lure of cashmere and silk blend yarns I have a feeling I'm going to quickly go broke spending money on such things. And more wooden needles…

  • They’re so purty!

So I had another massage therapy session today. I don't ache quite as much. Some things still hurt like a bugger mind you but as he said, he's been able to work on the more immediate stuff and was taking aim at the stuff that had been knotted for at least ten years. Oh and when your RMT is working on your back and gasps it's probably a bad thing. Even worse if he then starts to laugh. Ummm yeah, apparently I have an extra special ability to tie myself in knots. Rather literally. But, and this is a good but, I don't have to go back for a whole month. Yay! My next visit will be the week in-between my brother's surgery and when I fly back to PEI.So

So getting to the pretty stuff. After my appointment I wandered over to The Naked Sheep. I've been meaning to go there for awhile and check out the pretty yarn. And they do have lots of very pretty yarn. Soooooooooooooo many colours. It was actually a wee bit overwhelming. Aside from looking at yarn and hoping to be inspired I went there because I knew they had Lantern Moon products. Lantern Moon is a nifty company. Check out their about page – they are socially conscious as well. I was *really* tempted by the needle holders but I couldn't bring myself to pay that much for them even if they are really, really, really pretty (and another store has needle holders on sale and they are pretty, even if not Lantern Moon ones). So after much thought and browsing I finally settled on something – a pair of Lantern Moon rosewood needles. They're purrrrrrrty. Think they'll inspire me to finish my project??? Personally – I'm doubtful. lol

  • I like it!

I've been reading Crazy Aunt Pearl's blog for awhile now. I just checked out her Cafe Press store today. Her tshirt – I LIKEY!

If you can't see it all it says "I Knit Therefore I Am always armed with two really sharp sticks, study yarn and scissors so do not fuck with me."

I expect no less from a woman who while in Paris attacked a drunk man that was harrassing them in the wee sma's of the morning with her umbrella while yelling "I'm from Los Angeles, motherf***er! I'll bust your ass!!"

  • Just call me wrap girl

    Date: 2006.05.04 | Category: Knitting | Response: 2

So I've been knitting again lately. Rather than sit in front of the TV with the laptop I've been sitting in front of the tv with my knitting needles. I've been working on the same project for 1.5 years. I'm sick of it. But in the next day or so I should finally finish this…thing.  You see i just cast on a bunch of stitches and started knitting this wide wrap thingie.  It will soon be long enough to do something with…but what? It's basically a long rectangle. I'm thinking about sewing two corners together, and make pseudo-sleeves that will really just function to keep it from falling off my shoulders. And keep me from needing to pin it. I can see it in my mind and it looks good.  Reality will likely be different story.  When I finish this will only be the second project I've finished.  I'm the type that often starts projects and rarely finishes them because I get distracted by something bright and shiny. Ohh speaking of which I have a bracelet to make as well. Hmmmmm.

I've been reading a fair number of knitting blogs lately. And it seems that most people seem to be sock people.  I just can't see me as a sock knitter. I'm really not that big on socks. Maybe some day I'll make a pair and change my mind but in the meantime, nah.  I prefer to walk around my apartment sockless.

So I've decided I'm going to be a knitter of wraps and scarves. Maybe even sweaters.  Because my arms, shoulders, and neck often get cold. So it makes sense right???

But first to finish this stinking thing. Then next to find a new project to work on. Shouldn't be too hard right?
